285. Wealth of Worry
This is a 24 × 30 × 1.5 inch gallery profile piece inspired by the “Sword of Damocles”. Damocles was a friend of King Dionysius of Syracuse who envied and commented on the King’s seemingly carefree and luxurious lifestyle. In order to demonstrate the constant anxiety and pressure of ruling, King Dionysius suspended a sword above Damocles’s head held by a single strand of horse hair. The story is now often used to portray worry about the future even when everything is going well. “Damocles Syndrome” is often something experienced by cancer survivors where once cured and cancer free, they wake up each day waiting for recurrence. It can also serve as metaphor for the classic feeling of “… is this really what you asked for?”
